Scriptures for our Local gathering

Here is some homework for you all. I have set up teh following to assist you with looking at the Scriptures around hell.

There are 4 words translated to hell from Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. They are as follows:

  1. GK H8619 | S H7585   שְׁאוֹל   šᵉʾol   65xn.f. & m. [8615; cf. 8520, 8628]. grave; by extension, realm of death, deepest depths, transliterated “Sheol”. netherworld; Sheol.
  2. GK G1147 | S G1067   γέεννα   geenna   12x  Gehenna, pr. the valley of Hinnom, south of Jerusalem, once celebrated for the horrid worship of Moloch, and afterwards polluted with every species of filth, as well as the carcasses of animals, and dead bodies of malefactors; to consume which, in order to avert the pestilence which such a mass of corruption would occasion, constant fires were kept burning; hence, hell, the fires of Tartarus, the place of punishment in Hades, Mt. 5:22, 29, 30; 10:28; 18:9, et al. hell.
  3. GK G87 | S G86   ᾅδης   hadēs   10xthe invisible abode or mansion of the dead; the place of punishment, hell; the lowest place or condition, Mt. 11:23; Lk. 10:15 grave; hades; hell.
  4. GK G5434 | S G5020   ταρταρόω   tartaroō   1x  to cast or thrust down to Tartarus or Gehenna, 2 Pet. 2:4*

The following is a quick study. I simply searched the KJV Bible (where most of our theology comes from for main stream churches today) for the English word ‘hell’. The results are in the first column.

Then I simply changed the translation I was looking at to NASB 1995 with out doing a new search. This gives us the same scriptures found in the KJV search now in the second column in a more modern translation. Allowing you to do a direct comparison.

I changed the translation again to Young’s Literal translation (written in 1862) without changing the KJV search results and those scriptures are in the third column. Another direct comparison so you see how the translations have changed, and hwo this affects what is being taught.

In the fourth column, You have a replication of the KJV ‘hell’ search. Same as the first column.

In the fifth column you have the results from an English word ‘hell’ search in the NASB 1995.

And finally in the last column you have the results from an English word ‘hell’ search in the YLT. That is right,  there is nothing there.

Any questions please ask.

Love you Peter
